Global economy faces four key risks, warns Singapore’s MAS chief

The global economy faces not one, but four key uncertainties. It includes a recession next year, according to Singapore’s central bank chief Ravi Menon. A recession would be a sign that authorities will be in firefighting mode for longer.

  1. He listed the severity of the slowdown.
  2. The trajectory of inflation over the medium term.
  3. The impact of geopolitics on markets
  4. Climate risk on portfolios is the main risk to the global outlook.

Singapore, like many economies around the world, is grappling with inflation that has yet to peak and a tight labor market. That is still creating headaches for companies that lack workers as they emerge from the pandemic. The MAS has already been adjusted four times in the past year. Adjustment includes two surprise moves and expects to adjust again next month to slow price growth by the end of the year from the current level of 7%.

Medium-term inflation is likely to be higher for longer, rather than recent benign price gains, Menon said. He added that the era of cheap money and labor is likely over.

Singapore has managed to maintain a stable pace of growth this year amid headwinds. The median of 37 economists in a Bloomberg survey in late August projected a 3.6% growth for 2022 after 8% last year. That will be one of the slowest expansion rates in the Southeast Asian region.

Modi assails Putin over Ukraine war

SAMARKAND: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that now was not the time for war directly attacking the Kremlin chief in public over the nearly seven-month conflict in Ukraine.

Putin has said that Russia is not isolated because it can look east to major Asian powers such as China and India.

But at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, concerns came to light.

“I know that today’s era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this,” Modi told Putin at a televised meeting in Samarkand.

As Modi pointed out, Russia’s supreme leader since 1999 pursed his lips and looked at Modi. He then looked down before touching the hair on the back of his head.

Putin told Modi he understood the Indian leader had concerns about Ukraine. But Moscow was doing everything it could to end the conflict.

“I know his position on the conflict in Ukraine, the concerns he expresses,” Putin said. “We will do our best to stop this as soon as possible.”

He said Ukraine had rejected the negotiations. Ukraine has said it will fight until it expels all Russian troops from its land. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says he will never accept a “peace” that allows Russia to keep Ukrainian land.

India has become Russia’s No. 2 oil buyer after China, as others have reduced purchases after the invasion.

Texas Social Media Law on Web Censorship Upheld by Federal Appeals Court

A federal appeals court has upheld the validity of a Texas social media law that companies like Meta Platforms Inc. and Twitter Inc. say will prevent them from blocking hate speech and extremism.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in New Orleans on Friday lifted a lower court order that had prevented the legislation from taking effect.

Texas law prohibits social media platforms with more than 50 million users from discriminating based on point of view. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republicans argue. The legislation is necessary to protect conservative voices from being silenced. But tech groups say the measure prohibits platforms. Platforms are from removing neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan rules or Russian propaganda about their invasion of Ukraine.

“We reject the platforms’ attempt to extract a free censorship right from the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of expression,” a panel of judges in the appeals court said. “Platforms are not newspapers. Their censorship is not speech.”

The judges referred the case back to the lower court for further action, under their opinion.

NetChoice is a trade group that represents Facebook owner Meta and other Internet companies. They said it was disappointed with the decision, which “undermines First Amendment protections.”

The majority opinion was written by Judge Andrew Oldham, who was nominated to the bench by President Donald Trump. Judge Edith Jones, nominated by President Ronald Reagan, agreed with Oldham. Judge Leslie Southwick, nominated by President George W. Bush disagreed in part with the majority.

Abbott signed the legislation, known as HB20, a year ago as part of a broader Republican push against what the party sees as censorship of his views.

Critics of the law have said it will wreak havoc on social media platforms. It is removing their ability to moderate and remove content that falls outside of user guidelines. It would also allow Texas residents to sue platforms if posts are removed because their content is being censored.

The law runs counter to growing pressure on social media platforms. They are tightening their rules on content moderation and ban posts that incite violence or harm. This week, executives from Meta, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok testified before a Senate committee. They faced questions about what companies are doing to protect users.

“We will not,” the judges wrote in their decision. “The laws of Florida and Texas are very different.”

The latest ruling “creates a division of the circuit with the unanimous decision of the 11th Circuit,” said Carl Szabo. He is a Vice President and General Counsel of NetChoice. “We remain convinced that when the U.S. Supreme Court hears one of our cases, it will uphold first-amendment rights to websites, platforms, and apps.”

New Delhi: Varun Dhawan and Anil Kapoor were at their candid best in the new episode of Koffee With Karan 7. No episode is complete without conversations about the celebs’ relationships. It happened on the new one too. Karan Johar asked Varun Dhawan about his marriage. He said, “You pretty much married your “college sweetheart.” Varun was quick to correct KJo and said, “School sweetheart.” Speaking about wife Natasha Dalal, Varun Dhawan said, “it has been amazing. She is the best thing that’s happened to me in my life. She is the balancing factor in my life. And she doesn’t ask for much. She doesn’t demand much. She wants my time. She is amazing.”

Karan Johar then directed the question to Anil Kapoor and asked him: “AK, married for so many years. Is this the kind of response you have as well to successful marriage for many decades?” Anil Kapoor replied: “No, this is one of the lessons I’ve taught him. You have to praise your wife and do things that make her happy. It is also important to consider how she makes you happy. This is all scripted.”

When KJo added, “Is that a game that you play?” Anil Kapoor said, “This is the game. Why do you think Jugjugg Jeeyo we could all identify with? You will see the real me in the film.”

KJo then pointed out: “The real you in the film was cheating on your wife.” To this, Anil Kapoor said, “Can’t hear you.” Karan Johar then asked, “What is your theory on infidelity in a marriage?” The veteran actor’s reply was: “No, I don’t believe in that. You know, we’re very sincere, very honest. You know completely.” He added, “I don’t endorse it.”

When Varun Dhawan was asked, “Do you endorse it?” He said, “Not at all. Not at all.” Asked if “sexual infidelity is a deal breaker” for him, Varun replied, “100 percent. It is a deal breaker for my wife and my dog. I don’t think he will be happy about it. If I cheat on my wife, my dog will bark and let her know. So I will not go there.”

KATHMANDU: The moment Pakistan had been waiting for finally came in the 40th minute against the Maldives on Tuesday – the first goal for the women’s national team in eight years.

After that, the floodgates opened as Pakistan scored six more times with Nadia Khan getting four in the second half in a crushing 7-0 win in their final SAFF Women’s Championship Group ‘A’ match here at Dasharath Rangasala Stadium.

Finally, they were able to taste a victory; his first since 2014 and the biggest in his history having opened the tournament with defeats against India and Bangladesh respectively.

“This is the perfect launch pad for us… there is nothing better than this,” Pakistan coach Adeel Rizki said at a post-match press conference with the women’s team that missed international football for most of the last decade due to the institutional crisis in the Pakistan Football Federation.

Even participation in this tournament would not have been possible if FIFA’s suspension over Pakistan had not been lifted in June.

“We could have said we couldn’t do this as we had very little time to prepare,” Rizki added. “But we took advantage of this opportunity by the neck and had a camp for the last month. It wasn’t easy, but we tried our best to be here.

“We’re going to continue [this momentum]. We will take a break after returning home and then we will try to get some national tournaments up and running and try to organize more matches for the team.”

Already out of the semi-final contest, Pakistan was looking to finish the tournament on top and tear the Maldives apart once Rameen Fareeed’s long-range effort beat goalkeeper Aminath Leeza on the rebound for the first goal.

Khadija Kazmi doubled Pakistan’s lead three minutes into the second half from the penalty spot before Nadia took over with goals in the 53rd, 78th, and 84th, leaving the Maldives defense in their wake with their pace.

“The previous two matches, we had different oppositions… teams that had been together for a long time,” Nadia, who plays for Doncaster Rovers Belles in England’s fourth tier, told reporters after the match.

“We had different strategies, but in this game, we knew we can attack more, but I still think it’s the union and belief in each player and mutual trust that also pushed us through.”

Nadia added a fourth in the 90th minute before substitute Anmol Hira completed the defeat in the fifth minute of stoppage time to leave the Maldives winless in the tournament and score Pakistan’s biggest win since their 4-1 win over Bhutan in 2014.

Bangladesh later took first place in the group after a resounding 3-0 victory over India, which has won all five editions of the tournament.

Jahan Shopna scored twice, while Srimoti Krishnarani Sarkar scored the other goal as Bangladesh inflicted India’s first defeat in SAFF women’s championship history.

Bangladesh stunned India by taking the lead in the 12th minute when Srimoti’s brilliantly weighted ball was finished off by Jahan, who became a provider 10 minutes later when Srimoti found the back of the net.

Jahan got his second in the 53rd, this time converting from captain Sabina Khatun’s pass as Bangladesh set up a quarter-final clash with Bhutan on Friday as India will face hosts Nepal for a place in the final.
